Mark your calendar for September 13-15, 2021!

While APA California was looking forward to gathering the state’s planning community in Riverside for our annual conference this September, the ongoing uncertainty around our ability to host large in-person events has demanded, once again, that we plan a virtual conference for 2021. We are excited to make a return visit to Riverside and the Inland Empire for our 2024 conference, following our 2022 conference in Anaheim and Fresno in 2023.

We’ll miss the camaraderie of seeing colleagues from across the state, but a virtual format allows for flexibility and creativity in delivering the learning and networking opportunities you expect from the APA California Conference—no standing at the back of a packed convention hall required! In the coming weeks, we’ll share a call for presentations, which this year will include networking activities and virtual mobile workshops or tours in addition to conference sessions. The 2021 conference will be a truly statewide affair, tapping into the energy and creativity of planners from throughout California in planning, hosting, and delivering the conference.

Changing Plans | Changing Planning

Now is the time to contribute to making the 2021 APA California Virtual Conference a success!

The conference theme, Changing Plans | Changing Planning, focuses on how we will adapt to what we have learned from the experiences of 2020 and 2021 (so far). In response to the survey conducted following the 2020 Virtual Conferences, we received lots of great recommendations and ideas. One of main messages was to establish a balance in session types and subjects, which—in part—is what led us to double-edged theme. We‘ll have one program track focused on the processes and practices of plan-making and another focused on the evolving profession and its role in creating healthy, safe, and vital communities for everyone.

Changing Plans

How will our plans and planning tools be different? What is the latest in nuts-and-bolts planning methods or strategies? What are the new tips-and-tricks or how-tos? Or from a bigger picture perspective, are we being well-served by the current framework of plans and implementation mechanisms?

Changing Planning

How will planning and the role of planners be different? Are social and demographic change affecting how we approach planning with and for the communities we serve? How has the disruption we have experienced disrupted the planning profession, if at all? Are the institutions of planning up to the challenges we‘re facing in contemporary society?
